What Is Medication-Assisted Treatment?
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat opioid use disorder. It is the gold-standard, evidence-based approach recommended by SAMHSA, the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), and the CDC.
MAT is not “replacing one drug with another.” The medications used in MAT bind to the same brain receptors as opioids like heroin, fentanyl, or prescription painkillers — but they do so in a way that stops withdrawal, blocks cravings, and allows your brain to heal. Patients on MAT are 50% less likely to die from opioid-related causes and dramatically more likely to stay in treatment long-term.
At our Morehead clinic, we offer every FDA-approved MAT option so you and your provider can choose the medication that fits your life.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does MAT cost in Morehead, Kentucky?
Most patients with Kentucky Medicaid pay $0 out of pocket for MAT medications and visits. Commercial insurance copays vary — our team verifies your specific coverage before your first appointment. Self-pay patients receive our discounted cash rate; call for current pricing.
How long do I have to stay on MAT?
There is no fixed duration. Some patients use MAT for 6-12 months as part of early recovery; others benefit from long-term maintenance, which the ASAM guidelines fully support. There is no medical reason to rush off MAT — your provider will help you decide when and how to taper if that’s your goal.
Is Sublocade or Brixadi better than Suboxone?
Neither is universally “better.” Suboxone gives you daily control and can be adjusted rapidly. Sublocade and Brixadi eliminate daily dosing decisions and remove the possibility of missed doses. Injection MAT tends to have better long-term retention rates, but Suboxone works excellently for many patients. Read our
comparison article
for a full breakdown.
Can I get MAT via telehealth from Morehead?
For follow-up visits, yes — telehealth is available for eligible patients. Your first appointment typically must be in person for a physical exam and (if injection MAT) the first injection. After that, most maintenance care can happen by phone or video.
Do I need to have insurance to be seen?
No. We help uninsured patients apply for Kentucky Medicaid the same day. If you don’t qualify, we offer discounted self-pay rates. Cost should not be the barrier that keeps you from treatment.
Will my employer, family, or anyone else find out I’m getting MAT?
Your care is protected by HIPAA — the same privacy laws that protect all medical records. Fresh Start does not report to employers, family members, or anyone else without your written permission. Federal law (42 CFR Part 2) provides additional privacy protections specifically for addiction treatment records.
What if I’m still using — will you refuse to see me?
No. We treat patients where they are, not where we wish they were. Coming in while still using is often the smartest move — it means you can start MAT quickly and stop the cycle. We do not require sobriety before your first appointment.
Do you treat pregnant patients?
Yes. MAT with Suboxone or methadone is the standard of care for opioid use disorder during pregnancy, and it’s safer for both parent and baby than continued opioid use or unmanaged withdrawal. We coordinate with OB providers as needed.
