Can employers tell you are on Suboxone?

Standard pre-employment and random drug panels do not typically screen for buprenorphine unless it is specifically added, and even then, having a valid prescription means you are taking a legally prescribed medication.
Suboxone is also legally protected. Opioid use disorder is recognized as a medical condition under the Americans with Disabilities Act, which means employers generally cannot fire or refuse to hire you simply because you are in treatment for it. You are not required to volunteer that you take Suboxone, though in safety-sensitive roles it can sometimes help to have documentation from your provider on file.
What about safety-sensitive jobs?
Many of our Eastern Kentucky patients work in jobs where safety matters—driving, construction, healthcare, manufacturing. Being in stable MAT is far safer than untreated opioid use disorder. A person on a steady Suboxone dose is not impaired; a person in active withdrawal or actively using is.
